Protestors Escalate Their Tactics In The Face of The AHCA

If there is one thing that President Trump has placed into the hearts of the American people, it’s the need to speak out. Since arriving in office at the top of 2017, the number of protests and marches have grown significantly. From protecting the rights of immigrants to marching against the defunding of Planned Parenthood, many have taken to the streets to voice their concerns and make a difference. Now that Trumpcare seems to be moving forward, the protesters are leveling up.

In an article penned by Kate Zernike of the New York Times, protesters are taking their efforts beyond offices of Senators. When news broke less than two weeks ago that Trump’s proposed American Health Care Act was approved by the slimmest of margins, those who voted for the proposed bill were challenged for their support. It’s a widespread effort that manifests itself on a local level.

Colorado Senator Cory Gardner may sit at the helm of these new efforts. The Republican governor had protesters camped outside of his office for months prior to the House bill being approved, and after failed attempts to hold a town hall meeting with him, protesters erected a cardboard cutout of him and voiced their concerns to his image. The next step, however, will include guerilla tactics like popping up at his events and even purchasing tickets for his fundraisers to protest in person.

These protests are beyond unfulfilled promises like Gardner’s previous suggestions that he would protect Medicaid Expansion within his state. These are also warning shots to those Republican representatives whose seats are up for vote in 2018. Illinois Republican Representative Peter Roskam had his country club fundraiser bum rushed by protesters who reminded him that his seat was up for vote in 2018, and that he voted “yes” to the AHCA.

Protest groups are planning ways to speak directly to their representatives who voted for the AHCA to remind them that they can’t vote again if they’re voted out by next year. Is it aggressive? Perhaps. But it’s a measure Americans against the AHCA are taking to ensure that their healthcare will remain intact and affordable, and that those behind the wheel are nothing without a proper vehicle.
