Trump Readies Another ACA Repeal

On April 30th, President Trump tweeted the following in a series of two tweets:

“You can’t compare anything to ObamaCare because ObamaCare is dead,” he tweeted. “Dems want billions to go to Insurance Companies to bail out donors. New healthcare plan is on its way. Will have much lower premiums & deductibles while at the same time taking care of pre-existing conditions!”

The cryptic message is in reference to a potential House vote this week on a revised version of Trump’s proposed healthcare bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its related taxes. Trump’s touted mission since his campaign days has been to repeal and replace the ACA, and despite the hiccup with the American Healthcare Act (AHCA) also known as “TrumpCare,” which was pulled from a vote a month ago after much fanfare, Trump’s administration seems adamant about moving forward to repeal and replace the ACA. This revision follows the backlash from both Democrats and Republicans in Senate, many of the latter who refused to back the AHCA due to its half-baked principles.

The language in Trump’s proposed bill has now been amended, though such language has yet to be made public. However, what is suspected is that the amended bill steers more towards the House Freedom Caucus, which was the right-wing group that tanked the prior version of the AHCA. The problem with a more right-wing version is the likely alienation from the more moderate Republicans such as the sizable Tuesday Group. While many were pessimistic of the AHCA being passed, this second go’round has the Trump Administration optimistic.

A day following Trump’s tweet, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in his press briefing: “We have a good whip count. I think we feel very good about where we are and where it’s headed. But ultimately, the speaker and the House leadership determine when to call a vote.” While the vote is anticipated to happen this week, the White House’s economic adviser Gary Cohn believes there are now enough votes to pass it. “We’re convinced we got the votes and we are going to keep moving on with our agenda,” he said in an interview airing the same date as Spicer’s press briefing (May 1st).

So what does this mean? The waiting game is back on for the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act. While the bill may be passed this week, the real work will begin if and when that happens. Stay tuned.
