2018 Enrollment in Affordable Care Act Shows Americans’ Support

Open enrollment to obtain insurance starting on January 2018 under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ended on December 15 with more than 8.7 million Americans signing up for coverage, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The enrollment total for 2018 insurance coverage, reflecting the 39 states that use Heathcare.gov, almost matched last year’s total enrollment of 9.2 million achieved over a period twice as long as this year’s sign-up period. Nearly 4.1 million of the total 2018 enrollment occurred in the last week of the enrollment period. Of the 8.7 million enrolled, more than 2.46 million were new consumers. The remaining 6.83 million were automatically re-enrolled in their insurance programs.

The five states with the most enrollees are:

Florida                     1,715,227
Texas                       1,126,838
North Carolina        519,803
Georgia                    480,912
Virginia                    400,015

CMS plans to release a more detailed 2018 enrollment report in March, including final plan selection data from the 11 state-based exchanges that do not use the HealthCare.gov platform and those states in which the ACA deadline was extended.

Interestingly, an analysis by the Associated Press found that about 7.3 million of the 8.7 million consumers signed up so far for next year come from states Trump won in the 2016 presidential election, including the four states with the highest number of sign-ups accounting for nearly 3.7 million customers. The AP’s analysis found that 11 states beat 2017′s enrollment figures. Of them, eight —Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming— went for Trump, who posted double-digit victories in all but Iowa.

The response to the 2018 open enrollment demonstrates that Americans still see the value in obtaining health insurance, despite the ACA’s flaws, increasing premiums of plans on government marketplace exchanges, and continued efforts by the Republican majority in Congress and the White House to undermine the law.
